In this engaging episode of Remarkable World Commentary, Donna J. Jodhan sits down with Robert (Rob) Lattanzio, Executive Director of ARCH Disability Law Centre, for a candid conversation about how durable partnerships between community advocates and lawyers are built on trust, shared values, and a relentless commitment to disability rights. Rob traces ARCH's roots as a Legal Aid, funded, test-case poverty law clinic founded in 1979/1980, now in its 45th year, explaining its unique mandate: systemic litigation, law reform and rights education grounded in lived experience, alongside direct legal services and free, confidential advice for Ontarians with disabilities. He and Donna unpack ARCH's holistic approach to choosing test cases, the importance of long-standing community relationships, and how a provincial mandate can yield national impact.
Here Dr. Kirk Adams spotlights Ken Brandt, a global IT and cybersecurity leader turned author, whose memoir 'Positive Vision' shows how reframing constraints can fuel performance. Drawing on Brandt's "advantages of poor eyesight" lens (like calmer public speaking and practical "menu tactics"), Adams translates story into system: embed inclusive meeting norms, simplify decision paths with clear defaults, and treat access as non-optional. He connects these behaviors to measurable returns through his own Apex Program work and NICE-aligned pathways, showing how accessible design, mentoring, and practicums move overlooked talent to billable roles faster and at lower cost.
In this episode of Remarkable World Commentary, Donna J. Jodhan welcomes Elections Canada changemaker Paul Jorgenson for a candid look at how accessibility is woven into Canada's federal elections. The two revisit their first collaboration at the 2019 coast-to-coast disability town halls and unpack why Elections Canada grounds its services in lived experience, from Canadians with disabilities to Indigenous communities, youth, newcomers, and electors experiencing homelessness. Jorgenson explains his remit as Assistant Director for Stakeholder Mobilization, a role that is busiest between elections as his team builds partnerships, runs consultations, audits programs, and keeps the agency ready to deliver whenever a vote is called.

In this illuminating episode of Remarkable World Commentary, Donna J. Jodhan welcomes Sonia Gangopadhyay, who leads the Canadian Transportation Agency's Center of Expertise for Accessible Transportation, to unpack how the CTA protects the right to accessible travel across federally regulated modes, from airlines and interprovincial buses to terminals and screening/border services. Sonia traces the agency's evolution from early railway oversight to today's regulations and tribunal decisions (including One Person, One Fare and mobility-aid coverage), explaining how rules, guidance, and codes become enforceable obligations. She lifts the curtain on her team's day-to-day, running the accessibility helpline, building training resources, collaborating with ICAO/IATA, and supporting regulatory development, then details “on the ground” compliance: designated enforcement officers, inspections across modes, investigations when violations occur, and administrative monetary penalties up to $250,000, alongside a new program that shadows travelers with disabilities to observe real trips end-to-end.

Lacasse traces a path shaped by her grandmother's courage, a deafblind father, and Toronto's queer activist community, roots that inform a pedagogy centered on belonging, “relationships as the curriculum,” collaborative learning, and helping children see themselves as change-makers. The two revisit Lacasse's Grade 5 class joining Donna's 2010 Charter challenge, students wrote to the Prime Minister and learned to spot real-world barriers, illustrating how authentic advocacy builds critical thinking and voice.

In this wide-ranging episode of Remarkable World Commentary, Donna J. Jodhan sits down with Toronto Pearson's accessibility lead, Kathy Saliba, to unpack how one airport is turning "independence, dignity, and delight" from slogans into daily practice. Sparked by Donna's 2021 feedback, Saliba traces Pearson's curb-to-cabin choreography, where airlines provide assistance but the airport orchestrates consistency, and highlights the Rick Hansen Foundation Gold certification earned after multi-year retrofits: accessible self-serve kiosks, hundreds of tactile attention indicators, more quiet spaces, and 100+ hearing loops. They spotlight people-first programs that change staff behavior (the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard, now embraced by Air Canada and WestJet) and traveler-first tools (a pivot from little-used wayfinding beacons to the Aira Explorer service, plus work to personalize Pearson's accessible app and digital maps). Here, Ed Henkler focuses on the caregiver's parallel journey when a loved one loses vision, emphasizing patience, empathy, and self-care while balancing help with empowerment. He maps the emotional terrain, listening without judgment, validating grief, and building the caregiver's own support network, then offers practical steps to foster independence: adapt the home (brighter non-glare lighting, stronger contrast, decluttering and consistent placement), learn sighted-guide technique, communicate precisely and person-first (identify yourself, give specific directions, redirect conversations to the person with vision loss), and explore assistive technology together. He points caregivers to resources such as Family Caregiver Alliance and APH ConnectCenter's VisionAware. As part two of a series inspired by his experience with his mom, the piece underscores that caregiving is a shared journey in which relationships can grow stronger when both parties adapt, and when caregivers extend patience not only to their loved one, but to themselves.

Here, Ed Henkler explains that while vision loss is daunting, it's possible to adapt and thrive by acknowledging the emotional impact, seeking peer and professional support, and embracing structured vision rehabilitation, including Orientation & Mobility, adaptive techniques for daily living, and assistive tech. He notes that routine checkups and lifestyle changes may help delay loss, but when it occurs, practical tools like screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver), apps (Be My Eyes, Seeing AI), and adaptive kitchen aids can restore independence. He highlights resources such as the American Foundation for the Blind, National Federation of the Blind, and APH's VisionAware, and frames the article as the first in a two-part series (the next for caregivers, inspired by his and his mother's journey). The message: redefine "normal," leverage training, technology, and community, and build a fulfilling life that's not limited by changing sight.

About: Magnifiers & More, established in 2002 by Deborah Kogler, is Northeast Ohio's only retail store dedicated to providing products and consultations for individuals with low vision, blindness, and vision disabilities. With over forty years of experience in eye care, Deborah founded the company to create a one-stop shop for vision aids, including specialized tools for managing conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts.
The store offers a wide range of over seventy-five magnifiers, talking items, large print products, special lights, electronic aids, Braille items, glare control solutions and More.
A key figure in the company's story is Murphy, Deborah's Golden Retriever and original CEO, "Canine Executive Officer," who was the store's mascot and greeter for 15 years. Today, Jeffrey, another Golden Retriever trained as a service dog, serves as the CFO, "Canine Fun Officer," delighting customers and supporting Deborah.

Barrier Free Canada — Canada sans Barrières is proud to announce a bold new strategic investment aimed at advancing accessibility and inclusion in Canada's workforce. This initiative supports innovative training, education, and employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, helping to eliminate systemic barriers and foster a more equitable labor market. By partnering with key stakeholders across sectors, the investment will drive meaningful change, preparing a diverse and inclusive workforce to meet the challenges of tomorrow. This milestone reflects Barrier Free Canada's ongoing commitment to building a barrier-free nation where everyone can thrive and contribute fully to society.
About: Barrier-Free Canada/Canada Sans Barrieres (BFC/CSB) advocates for the Canadian Parliament to enact a strong and effective Canadians with Disabilities Act (CDA) to achieve a barrier-free Canada for all persons with disabilities.
To this end, BFC/CSB is seeking endorsements from national disability organizations to build a non-partisan community coalition. BFC/CSB would also like to identify point persons from these organizations to act as key contacts.
The steering committee of BFC/CSB has drafted a set of principles concerning a CDA that are drawn from the principles that underpin the provincial disability legislation in Ontario and Manitoba. A CDA is not meant to replace provincial disability legislation. It will complement such legislation and benefit Canadians living in provinces with and without provincial disability legislation. At this point in time, CNIB, March of Dimes Canada, Canadian Hearing Society and MS Society of Canada have endorsed the BFC/CSB principles and confirmed their support for the movement to enact a CDA. There is no individual or organizational charge for membership in BFC/CSB.
Please contact Donna Jodhan, Founder of Barrier-Free Canada, at info@barrierfreecanada.org 📧️ with any questions or to express your organization's support and identify a key contact.
