However, concerns remain about the system's ability to address the nuances of democratic deliberation and the potential marginalization of smaller minority opinions.

The travel industry still has a lot of work to do to ensure travellers with hidden disabilities and additional needs receive the support they require, InteleTravel's annual conference heard. Ireland-based agent Doey Mulligan, who was involved in a road collision 10 years ago which continues to affect her everyday life, said regular training was needed “from the top to the bottom” of the sector. Pointing to her sunflower lanyard which indicates the wearer has hidden disabilities, she said: “There still needs to be a whole load of work so people understand what this is.”
Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) is extending the free use of a ground-breaking smartphone app designed to enhance accessibility for blind and partially sighted passengers to all 236 of its Great Northern, Southern, and Thameslink-managed stations. Some six out of 10 Irish businesses are not prepared for the European Accessibility Act, which takes effect in June 2025, according to a new survey by Mason Hayes and Curran. The Act provides for digital accessibility on public sector websites, mobile apps, and other software for older people and people with disabilities. Commercial partner at Mason Hayes and Curran, Dermot McGirr, said the fact so many businesses are not ready for the Act shows a lack of public awareness in the market “because it sort of falls between two stools” of human resources and product recognition.
Network Rail underspent by £99M and failed to complete 72 projects in its programme to make stations more accessible during Control Period 6 (CP6) 2019 to 2024. Network Rail's Access For All programme aims to make all stations step-free with the installation of lifts and ramps alongside other upgrades including tactile warning surfaces, lowered handrails, new ticket gates, and accessible waiting rooms and toilets. Board minutes from May this year found the rail infrastructure admitting that it had “significantly underperformed” in its Access For All programme during CP6.
With Halloween just 'round the corner, thoughts go back to the homemade fudge made by Aunt Pat or the popcorn balls at the house next door. It was probably a lot of work making homemade treats but from a child's perspective it didn't seem like much of a trick to make these great treats for all the kids in the neighbourhood. A pillow case full of stash did not last long in a house with four older and two younger siblings. The most important thing at the end of the evening was to dump the stash on the dining table, extracting all the really good treats then stashing them away for later.
Sport should be accessible to everyone - and when it isn't, it sucks. That's the message from Auckland football fan Jonno Ross, a wheelchair user of 13 years after a car crash and broken neck left him without the use of his legs and without one of his good mates. Attending sports events at large stadiums can be chaotic for an able-bodied fan, Ross tells the Herald. For those who use a wheelchair or have another disability, even the smallest barrier to access can become a major one.

With the hottest concert tour in history set to touch down in Ontario next month when Taylor Swift's Eras Tour hits Toronto, a disabled Kingston man is expressing his frustrations with not only the ticketing industry but with the live event industry for people with accessibility challenges. Drew Cumpson, who was paralyzed from the neck down in a swimming accident in Peru 13 years ago, said that sky-high prices and frustrations people are experiencing in attempting to get tickets to one of the six concerts Swift is performing at in Toronto next month only highlight a litany of issues surrounding a broken industry.

When Franklyn McFadden needs to repair his $15000 wheelchair, that expense is on him. It's just one of many extra costs that he says comes with living with a disability. "I didn't choose to be a person in a wheelchair, and I don't profess to enjoy the fact that I have to use one," he said. It's widely recognized that living with a disability comes with a distinct set of needs. And now new research from the non-profit Wellesley Institute shows the cost of thriving in the GTA — which it defines as living a healthy, engaged life — is 39 percent higher if you live with a disability than it is for those who don't have a disability.
Paralympic swimmer Anastasia Pagonis, who lost her vision at 14, emphasized the need for accessible beauty products. At a recent daytime Halloween event in Stittsville, a young boy dressed up as a firefighter was collecting treats in a bag that read “My name is Louis. I have autism. I can't say 'trick or treat' but I love being included!'” That lone image underscores the difficulty many people have fully enjoying Halloween with physical obstacles such as walkways and steps as well as loud, scary music, flashing lights, animatronics, and the like, plus simply the expectation of being able to say “trick or treat” turning what is supposed to be a pretend hell into a real one for many would-be participants.
More than one million New Zealanders have a physical, sensory, learning, mental health, or other disability. But despite making up nearly a quarter of the population, accessibility remains an afterthought in transport, Access Matters Aotearoa says. While the government has recently introduced changes to help level the playing field, there is still so much more that needs to be done, the organisation added. On 1 October, the fine for misusing mobility parks increased by 400 percent - from $150 to $750.
The Vermont Supreme Court ordered the state Human Services Board to reconsider a case where a man with disabilities was denied adequate services. Despite being entitled to 30 hours of care per week, he received significantly less, prompting the court's ruling.

The Rise Up organization created a wheelchair accessible picnic table called the 'able table'. It features a cutout in the center to accommodate wheelchairs, allowing access from both sides. Matt Conway, Executive Director of Rise Up, highlighted its design to ensure inclusivity.
More than 100 people got together in a Regina independent living seniors complex this week to acknowledge the value of time. They celebrated the residents of Broadway Terrace who have birthdays in October. But over cake and coffee on Wednesday, some raised concerns about how residents will participate in another important event this month — the provincial election. Gail Beesley has lived at the building for around 10 years. To her recollection, there's been a voting station in the complex for every municipal, provincial, and federal election since she moved in.
Experts discussed the potential of AI to improve accessibility on Hollywood sets during TheWrap's Grill conference. However, they raised concerns about AI reflecting societal biases, emphasizing that AI mimics existing discrimination present in society.

About: Hello, and welcome to the Heart of Influence With Dr. Kirk Adams Show.
I co-host this monthly, virtual, live-streamed event with Sean Callagy, founder of Unblinded Sales Mastery, a Certified Disability Owned Business Enterprise by Disability-In.
During my service as President and CEO of the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), I recruited Sean to our board of trustees, where among other things, he was our largest individual donor for each of the three years he served.
My Heart of Influence show focuses on disability inclusion. I bring together 7 or 8 integrity-based leaders involved in disability owned business, corporate supplier diversity, disability advocacy, disabled entrepreneurship, or assistive technology innovation.
People that I believe should know one another and can very likely do business together.
Visionaries who believe a rising tide lifts all boats.
It's better than meeting for a cup of coffee!
— Dr. Kirk Adams, PhD

See how Donna can help kids with disabilities and young adults transition more smoothly to a daunting adult world. No need to be afraid to travel this path!

About: Barrier-Free Canada/Canada Sans Barrieres (BFC/CSB) advocates for the Canadian Parliament to enact a strong and effective Canadians with Disabilities Act (CDA) to achieve a barrier-free Canada for all persons with disabilities.
To this end, BFC/CSB is seeking endorsements from national disability organizations to build a non-partisan community coalition. BFC/CSB would also like to identify point persons from these organizations to act as key contacts.
The steering committee of BFC/CSB has drafted a set of principles concerning a CDA that are drawn from the principles that underpin the provincial disability legislation in Ontario and Manitoba. A CDA is not meant to replace provincial disability legislation. It will complement such legislation and benefit Canadians living in provinces with and without provincial disability legislation. At this point in time, CNIB, March of Dimes Canada, Canadian Hearing Society and MS Society of Canada have endorsed the BFC/CSB principles and confirmed their support for the movement to enact a CDA. There is no individual or organizational charge for membership in BFC/CSB.
Please contact Donna Jodhan, Founder of Barrier-Free Canada, at info@barrierfreecanada.org 📧️ with any questions or to express your organization's support and identify a key contact.

In addition to serving as an Editor to Access Information News David also serves as an Editor to the Top Tech Tidbits publication and is also the National Commercial Assistive Technology Advisor for Vision Australia where he has worked since 1990. Over this time he has assisted people who are blind or vision impaired in their home, education, and work settings to take advantage of the benefits of using assistive and main stream technology.
In the last seventeen years, he has also been involved with evaluating technology for use by people who are blind or vision impaired covering both low and high tech equipment (including Microsoft, Samsung, Google, Amazon, and Apple). David is also one of the key spokespersons for Vision Australia relating to technology.
He has been an Apple Ambassador for Apple Australia since 2009 with a group of other Ambassadors / Apple Distinguished Educators (ADE)'s covering the range of Apple's Accessibility solutions throughout Australia.
David produces a range of podcasts (since 2011) covering Apple and other technologies which are distributed on his own podcast (http://davidwoodbr.podbean.com). In addition, he also has a regular Talking Tech program (since 2013) which can be heard every Tuesday at 4:30 Eastern Summer Time on Vision Australia Radio Melbourne (available online) or via https://omny.fm/shows/talking-tech-vision-australia-radio
David also runs a weekly Tech Monday where people can chat about assistive and main stream technology, share information, and any tips and tricks.
David lost his sight when he was 8 years old and had to learn Braille. Since then, he completed high school, went to Sydney University receiving a Social Work degree, spent 4 years drug and alcohol counselling, and then moved into his current job.
As a person who is blind, David believes that as a user of the technology that he recommends to others, that he is well situated to look at the strengths and shortcomings of the assistive technology that he comes across in both his professional and personal life, in particular, mainstream technology that is accessible.
In addition to his weekly contributions to Access Information News and Top Tech Tidbits, David's regularly occurring activities are his weekly tech radio show, bi-monthly exploring tech webinars for Vision Australia, his iSee podcast when something of note grabs his attention, and the weekly Tech Monday chat sessions.
