Since the inception of information and communication technologies (ICT), the industry has struggled with what some believe are "unfunded mandates" requiring accessibility for individuals with disabilities. These needs often lead to costly legal battles, retrofitting expenses, and significant public relations challenges.
We have a strategic solution: the Tax Recovery Act (TRA).
The TRA proposes up to a 100% tax credit of funds spent on the inclusion of accessibility for developers who retrofit existing ICT and incorporate accessibility into new products. This involves amending the 1981 Research and Development Tax Credit Federal statute to include these provisions.
We are seeking your advocacy, financial support, and legislative assistance to make this initiative a reality.
Set up your tax-deductible contribution now.

Publisher (Di Blasi): Reader feedback like that provided by Mary below is the reason why we do what we do. And the very reason why you should consider joining us. Mary and I both tried to download the "Able Active" app from https://ableactive.ie/ but it said it was not currently available in our region or country (USA). Mary was wondering if there might be a way to request that it to be opened to people in the US? Even if there is not a lot of data yet from here. She sees it as a way people can contribute to the datasets to increase the info available, and believes that once it gets started others will give even more feedback once they learn about it. If you know of any way to reach these folks please reach out to me at: publisher@accessinformationnews.com 📧️.
Mary: "As a pediatric PT who has seen many kids grow up with disabilities I am really enjoying your emails. I often scan through and send info to people for them to learn about some of your particular highlights that I think would be helpful to them."

Several aviation stakeholders are doing admirable and important work to address a glaring cabin accessibility problem: wheelchair users cannot currently remain in their own mobility devices onboard aircraft. And the threat of seeing their chair damaged in the cargo hold is all too real. But in Airbus' view cabin concepts that would simply accommodate one or two wheelchair users in-flight via wheelchair securement systems will not adequately address the issue.
For almost 20 years a group of parrots and their owner lived at the Rutherford a co-op apartment building in the ritzy Gramercy Park neighborhood of Manhattan. For almost as many years the neighbors complained. The parrots shrieked and squawked they said. The parrots shouted human words but not clearly enough for the neighbors to follow their conversations. The parrots seemed to generally drive everyone mad. After years of complaints the chorus of caws and cries became unbearable.

He needed his partner to guide him up the rock. It was a relationship built of trust and — eventually — love.
One of the most popular sectors of online retail is clothing. I have shopped for clothes on websites for many years. In the past, I discussed common accessibility challenges that screen reader users face when shopping from online clothing retailers. Today, I will revisit this subject area and discuss mobile device accessibility. With mobile commerce accounting for nearly 73% of total e-commerce sales in recent years, the accessibility and usability of mobile clothing websites and apps are more critical than ever. As always, screen readers will be my main area of focus, specifically touch-based versions designed for portable devices.
When I sat down this week with James Green, who leads digital accessibility at Chase, I mentioned accessibility and financial institutions aren't necessarily congruent with one another. That is to say, when a person thinks of their bank, odds are good they don't think of it as the most accessible experience. As a disabled person who — in full disclosure — admittedly doesn't bank with Chase, I certainly have thought this way.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz's open acknowledgement that he and his wife used fertility treatments to conceive their two children and his candid discussions about that generated one of the most moving moments during a rally in Glendale Arizona when people chanted the name of his firstborn daughter Hope. The positive reaction to the candidate's discussion of the topic confirms the thumbs-up that Vice President Kamala Harris got for choosing her running mate from every faction of the Democratic Party.
Fresno is the least accessible city in the nation for people with mobility disabilities according to a new study by Forbes Health. The personal health website came up a list of the best — and worst — cities for accessibility in the United States based on factors such as the percentage of wheelchair-friendly rental properties and the number of accessible restaurants and attractions. About 12.2% of adults in the United States have a mobility disability according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Michigan Department of Education has 'fundamental misunderstandings about the scope of Section 504' that raise concerns about the state's past and future ability to comply with the disability civil rights law said the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights in a filing this month. The accusations came in response to MDE's motion to dismiss OCR's findings that the state harmed students with disabilities by sending incorrect guidance to school districts about make-up services for instructional time lost during pandemic school closures.
It's a hot and humid Thursday toward the end of the Missouri State Fair and the smells of fried food and the sounds of livestock fill the air. Walking onto the carnival midway though some things are noticeably absent - the lights on the rides are off no loud music is playing and the carnival game and ride operators aren't calling out to patrons. This year's Democratic National Convention (DNC) is happening at Chicago's United Center this week. The opening night festivities included speeches from Golden State Warriors and Team USA men's basketball head coach Steve Kerr Hillary Clinton Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and President Biden. Rarely a day passes without a sneering screed from Donald Trump that casts America as a land of stupid deranged weak and ugly people. It's such a tired litany that only the most absurdly vicious comments make their way into the press anymore. Most recently it was his remark that the civilian Medal of Freedom was superior to the military's Medal of Honor. The Medal of Freedom is "much better" Trump said last week than the Medal of Honor whose recipients who stepped in front of grenades and ran into burning buildings to save other human beings and are now in his words "in very bad shape because they've been hit so many times by bullets or they're dead.".
Only some 40 percent of disabled people are employed. But even that low figure is buoyed by federal laws against employment discrimination — a target of Project 2025 the Heritage Foundation's roadmap for a right-wing transformation of government by a second Trump White House. A key institution for the just treatment of disabled workers is the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission which enforces federal bans on workplace discrimination.

Imagine having to do your job but not being able to visually process the data right in front of you. Nearly 8% of genetic males and 0.5% of genetic females have some form of Color Vision Deficiency (CVD) or the decreased ability to discern between particular colors. CVD is commonly referred to as color blindness. Scientists use colors to convey information. Many scientists in the weather radar community have CVD and the use and interpretation of color is an important aspect of their work. Most colormaps don't take into account those with CVD; for instance, the maps show green next to red.

Degree by degree the earth's temperature ticks up. Heat records fall as reliably as the sun sets. In July the East Coast broiled. This week Texas and its neighbors are feeling the burn. It's been an absolute scorcher in the United States the hottest summer on record. Fossil fuel-induced climate change has transformed heat from a problem into a threat. Extreme heat kills more people than all other weather-related disasters combined. People with disabilities face even higher risk of injury or death during heat waves especially since they are more likely to have less income and no air conditioning.

Some countries use "subtitles" instead of "captions." But in the U.S., captions and subtitles are not the same thing. The word isn't important, but the difference is important. This is about captioning shows and movies in a language different from the viewers' language. Subtitles convert spoken another language into the viewer's language. Subtitles do not show sounds or voice changes. They don't identify speakers when it's not obvious. Captions identify sounds, voice changes, speakers, and music.
A mobility scooter user is calling on the States of Guernsey to speed up accessibility improvements around St Peter Port. Despite new anti-discrimination legislation coming into force, little practical progress has been made, leaving many islanders reluctant to leave their homes due to safety concerns.
Join us for a presentation with Sylvia Mangan and Perkins School for the Blind on Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI). CVI is the leading cause of visual impairment in children in developed countries and was recently identified as a National Eye Institute priority. There are many common associated conditions with CVI, such as Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, and a range of genetic syndromes. Perkins has created a new framework for understanding CVI, called the CVI visual behaviors. This framework was developed by combining information from current research, listening to the experiences of individuals with CVI, and analyzing trends in assessments of students living with CVI, This approach outlines 16 visual behaviors and associated compensatory strategies. It describes how the lives of individuals with CVI are impacted by the diagnosis and identifies how CVI differs from ocular visual impairments. This session will review these visual behaviors with examples. Presenter Bio: Sylvia Mangan is a CVI Coordinator in the CVI Center at Perkins School for the Blind. She began her career as a Speech-Language Pathologist, and completed her education at Northwestern University. She worked in public schools before joining the team at Perkins. She developed a passion for working with students with multiple disabilities, including Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI), with a special interest in supporting individuals with complex communication needs. She completed the CVI Certificate from University of Massachusetts, Boston, and is completing her degree as Teacher of the Visually Impaired from the same institution. She teaches a course on Augmentative-Alternative Communication (AAC) and CVI for graduate credit through Perkins eLearning, and enjoys speaking at conferences on supporting the unique learning profile of this demographic and amplifying their voices.

About: WayAround is the app for your smart device that provides on-demand details about everyday things. The simple tag-and-scan approach lets you quickly and easily identify things around you. It also provides extra details, like how something works or when it expires. The result? Doing more of the things you want, with more confidence and more independence.
All the information you want with just a tap of your phone. No more waiting around to ask someone. You need just two things to get started: The free mobile app for iOS or Android and some of our smart WayTags®.
Accessible labels for the blind, deafblind, and anyone with vision loss. Your biggest problem isn't poor eyesight. It's that so much of the information in the world is visual. But you shouldn't have to wait around for someone else to get the information you need. Or carry around a bulky, outdated device. There is a better way to get accurate and complete information every time. So you can reduce stress and gain independence.

Aira, one of the world's leading remote visual interpretation services, has announced a landmark partnership that will make the process of receiving remote technical support even more accessible! Aira will be deploying our cross-platform, fully accessible Remote Incident Manager across its entire team of agents dedicated to providing top notch visual interpretation.
As an Aira explorer, help with inaccessible computer tasks has always been possible, however this has required the use of off-the-shelf remote support tools with varying degrees of inaccessibility. IN recent years, the inaccessibility has made the process of establishing a connection for the support recipient quite difficult. Remote Incident Manager (RIM), by contrast, has been especially designed by and for blind and visually impaired users, yet can be used just as effectively by anyone!
Download the free RIM application on your Windows or macOSmachine today, and experience the best in accessible remote assistance!

About: Hello, and welcome to the Heart of Influence With Dr. Kirk Adams Show.
I co-host this monthly, virtual, live-streamed event with Sean Callagy, founder of Unblinded Sales Mastery, a Certified Disability Owned Business Enterprise by Disability-In.
During my service as President and CEO of the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), I recruited Sean to our board of trustees, where among other things, he was our largest individual donor for each of the three years he served.
My Heart of Influence show focuses on disability inclusion. I bring together 7 or 8 integrity-based leaders involved in disability owned business, corporate supplier diversity, disability advocacy, disabled entrepreneurship, or assistive technology innovation.
People that I believe should know one another and can very likely do business together.
Visionaries who believe a rising tide lifts all boats.
It's better than meeting for a cup of coffee!
— Dr. Kirk Adams, PhD

About: Barrier-Free Canada/Canada Sans Barrieres (BFC/CSB) advocates for the Canadian Parliament to enact a strong and effective Canadians with Disabilities Act (CDA) to achieve a barrier-free Canada for all persons with disabilities.
To this end, BFC/CSB is seeking endorsements from national disability organizations to build a non-partisan community coalition. BFC/CSB would also like to identify point persons from these organizations to act as key contacts.
The steering committee of BFC/CSB has drafted a set of principles concerning a CDA that are drawn from the principles that underpin the provincial disability legislation in Ontario and Manitoba. A CDA is not meant to replace provincial disability legislation. It will complement such legislation and benefit Canadians living in provinces with and without provincial disability legislation. At this point in time, CNIB, March of Dimes Canada, Canadian Hearing Society and MS Society of Canada have endorsed the BFC/CSB principles and confirmed their support for the movement to enact a CDA. There is no individual or organizational charge for membership in BFC/CSB.

Vision Ireland empowers those living with sight loss in several meaningful ways to enable them to continue living independent and fulfilling lives. In addition to serving as an Editor to Access Information News David also serves as an Editor to the Top Tech Tidbits publication and is also the National Commercial Assistive Technology Advisor for Vision Australia where he has worked since 1990. Over this time he has assisted people who are blind or vision impaired in their home, education, and work settings to take advantage of the benefits of using assistive and main stream technology.
In the last seventeen years, he has also been involved with evaluating technology for use by people who are blind or vision impaired covering both low and high tech equipment (including Microsoft, Samsung, Google, Amazon, and Apple). David is also one of the key spokespersons for Vision Australia relating to technology.
He has been an Apple Ambassador for Apple Australia since 2009 with a group of other Ambassadors / Apple Distinguished Educators (ADE)'s covering the range of Apple's Accessibility solutions throughout Australia.
David produces a range of podcasts (since 2011) covering Apple and other technologies which are distributed on his own podcast (http://davidwoodbr.podbean.com). In addition, he also has a regular Talking Tech program (since 2013) which can be heard every Tuesday at 4:30 Eastern Summer Time on Vision Australia Radio Melbourne (available online) or via https://omny.fm/shows/talking-tech-vision-australia-radio
David also runs a weekly Tech Monday where people can chat about assistive and main stream technology, share information, and any tips and tricks.
David lost his sight when he was 8 years old and had to learn Braille. Since then, he completed high school, went to Sydney University receiving a Social Work degree, spent 4 years drug and alcohol counselling, and then moved into his current job.
As a person who is blind, David believes that as a user of the technology that he recommends to others, that he is well situated to look at the strengths and shortcomings of the assistive technology that he comes across in both his professional and personal life, in particular, mainstream technology that is accessible.
In addition to his weekly contributions to Access Information News and Top Tech Tidbits, David's regularly occurring activities are his weekly tech radio show, bi-monthly exploring tech webinars for Vision Australia, his iSee podcast when something of note grabs his attention, and the weekly Tech Monday chat sessions.
