Since the inception of information and communication technologies (ICT), the industry has struggled with what some believe are "unfunded mandates" requiring accessibility for individuals with disabilities. These needs often lead to costly legal battles, retrofitting expenses, and significant public relations challenges.
We have a strategic solution: the Tax Recovery Act (TRA).
The TRA proposes up to a 100% tax credit of funds spent on the inclusion of accessibility for developers who retrofit existing ICT and incorporate accessibility into new products. This involves amending the 1981 Research and Development Tax Credit Federal statute to include these provisions.
We are seeking your advocacy, financial support, and legislative assistance to make this initiative a reality.
Set up your tax-deductible contribution now.

I was recently chatting with my friend, Tom Babinski, about a question that I hear from time to time: What's the difference between a WayTag and an Airtag? Tom is an accessibility consultant who specializes in travel and writes the blog Even Grounds. He uses both WayTags and Airtags to make his own travel more accessible, and he offered to write a guest post for our blog to share his tips.

Fortunately, a multitude of resources exist to ensure every player is not left behind.

We want to learn from parents or guardians of children with disabilities. The County of Santa Clara Division of Equity and Social Justice (DESJ) is conducting a Survey of Families with Children with Disabilities through the Office of Disability Affairs (ODA) and in partnership with Parents Helping Parents (PHP). We ask: What types of disabilities your children have. Whether your children are receiving support services. How helpful are the services. Whether you want other services for your child. About other general needs you may have. We would like to hear both from parents born in the U.S. and from immigrant parents. The survey does not ask about specific immigration statuses. People taking the survey should be at least 18 years old and live in Santa Clara County. People taking the survey should have children with disabilities. The survey will remain open for two months; May 2024 to July 2024. Results are expected November 2024. Survey Completion Time: 20 minutes or less.
Urgent Action Needed: Access Ready and Clear2Connect Coalition call on stakeholders to address FCC's proposed IP CTS compensation rate cuts, threatening essential services for 600,000 Americans with hearing loss. These reductions risk the quality and viability of real-time captioned phone conversations, crucial for veterans and individuals with disabilities. Join the effort to advocate for sustainable compensation rates to maintain high-quality, accurate services. Support this initiative by raising awareness and engaging with FCC Commissioners and Congress members. For more details, contact Douglas George Towne or Allison Wohl.

Publisher (Di Blasi): Dearest David. I am so very sorry to hear about your health scare and the closing of AppleVis. I think I speak for many in the community when I say that we sincerely appreciate the many valuable contributions that you have made possible over the years, especially since we now know the true personal cost. A cost that I too am acutely aware of, and the very reason that we work so hard to make sure that each publication can ultimately fund itself. The personal cost of beloved endeavors can be incredibly significant without support. Thank you for doing that for us. For all of us. It is sincerely appreciated and I assure you will never be forgotten. If you are ultimately unable to come up with any viable solutions to keep the site running as it was, we would be willing to donate the annual hosting and services required to keep the site online, indefinitely, in read-only mode. In this way your contributions, and the many contributions of others, can live on and continue to help the community long after your departure. You can always reach me at publisher@accessinformationnews.com 📧️. Wishing you, and rest of the AppleVis Team, all the very best. We're here if you need us.
David Goodwin: It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that after careful consideration I have made the difficult decision to step down from my responsibilities with AppleVis. As a direct result of my departure and following extensive deliberation, the editorial team has come to the painful conclusion that AppleVis will be closing. This decision was not made lightly, but it has become clear that continuing AppleVis without my involvement is not feasible.

Today, we celebrate the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), one of our Nation's most significant civil rights laws to protect people with disabilities from discrimination. For the more than 70 million Americans living with a disability, the ADA enshrines into law the idea that we all deserve opportunity, inclusion, respect, and dignity. I am proud to have co-sponsored this landmark legislation years ago, and I am honored to celebrate its lasting legacy today.

Braille, introduced by Louis Braille in Paris, France in 1829, has opened up the world of reading and writing for people who are blind or low vision. The system isn't perfect, however, and in its ordinary form, paper braille is bulky. Print documents need to be transcribed into the braille code, which can be time consuming and expensive. Enter the portable refreshable braille display on a device that can allow a user to store, read, and write documents. Braille users employ them today in many forms, but how did they get started? The first working display recorded in our files at The Dot Experience is a device developed first by James Bryce at International Business Machines (IBM), around 1950, and then later worked on by Arnold Grunwald at the Argonne National Laboratory. This device stored information on perforated paper tapes. It created raised braille characters on a plastic belt that moved under the reader's fingers at their chosen pace.

This month marks 34 years since the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law, and Disability Pride Month was officially established nearly a decade ago. As one blind author and illustrator recently pointed out, disability exists on a spectrum. And the fight for community, inclusion and acceptance is still going strong today. In the U.S. in 2021, nearly 42.5 million people — or 13% of the population — had a disability, according to the American Community Survey, conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. An estimated 1.3 billion people have a significant disability worldwide, according to the World Health Organization, which is 16% of the global population, or 1 in 6 people.

One thing society tends to do with disabled people is to underestimate us. Their assumptions and beliefs become our reality. It doesn't matter how hard we work or practice. If a hiring manager views me as incapable, then they won't hire me. I could've ended up in a low paying job that doesn't require much skill.
Flor Jimenez, a person who is legally blind, has filed a class action lawsuit in California against the Hyatt. The complaint alleges that this violates the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and California's Unruh Civil Rights Act .

About: Barrier-Free Canada/Canada Sans Barrieres (BFC/CSB) advocates for the Canadian Parliament to enact a strong and effective Canadians with Disabilities Act (CDA) to achieve a barrier-free Canada for all persons with disabilities.
To this end, BFC/CSB is seeking endorsements from national disability organizations to build a non-partisan community coalition. BFC/CSB would also like to identify point persons from these organizations to act as key contacts.
The steering committee of BFC/CSB has drafted a set of principles concerning a CDA that are drawn from the principles that underpin the provincial disability legislation in Ontario and Manitoba. A CDA is not meant to replace provincial disability legislation. It will complement such legislation and benefit Canadians living in provinces with and without provincial disability legislation. At this point in time, CNIB, March of Dimes Canada, Canadian Hearing Society and MS Society of Canada have endorsed the BFC/CSB principles and confirmed their support for the movement to enact a CDA. With Hadley, you can discover new ways to do things that have become more difficult due to vision loss and connect with a network of peers who "get it." And you don't need to come to Hadley. Hadley's help comes to you; online, on the phone or through the mail.
Since relaunching in July 2020, more than 70,000 people have signed up with Hadley, registering more than 200,000 workshop interactions. And our workshops have 98% satisfaction ratings. We reach all 50 states and more than 100 countries. And more people learn braille from Hadley than from any other organization worldwide.
Hadley is a proud partner of the National Eye Institute and the National Eye Health Education Program.
Hadley's help conveniently meets learners where they are. Free of wait lists. Free of office visits. Free of charge.

To date, the show has been downloaded in all 50 states in the US and over 100 other countries on all the inhabited continents. In addition to serving as an Editor to Access Information News David also serves as an Editor to the Top Tech Tidbits publication and is also the National Commercial Assistive Technology Advisor for Vision Australia where he has worked since 1990. Over this time he has assisted people who are blind or vision impaired in their home, education, and work settings to take advantage of the benefits of using assistive and main stream technology.
In the last seventeen years, he has also been involved with evaluating technology for use by people who are blind or vision impaired covering both low and high tech equipment (including Microsoft, Samsung, Google, Amazon, and Apple). David is also one of the key spokespersons for Vision Australia relating to technology.
He has been an Apple Ambassador for Apple Australia since 2009 with a group of other Ambassadors / Apple Distinguished Educators (ADE)'s covering the range of Apple's Accessibility solutions throughout Australia.
David produces a range of podcasts (since 2011) covering Apple and other technologies which are distributed on his own podcast (http://davidwoodbr.podbean.com). In addition, he also has a regular Talking Tech program (since 2013) which can be heard every Tuesday at 4:30 Eastern Summer Time on Vision Australia Radio Melbourne (available online) or via https://omny.fm/shows/talking-tech-vision-australia-radio
David also runs a weekly Tech Monday where people can chat about assistive and main stream technology, share information, and any tips and tricks.
David lost his sight when he was 8 years old and had to learn Braille. Since then, he completed high school, went to Sydney University receiving a Social Work degree, spent 4 years drug and alcohol counselling, and then moved into his current job.
As a person who is blind, David believes that as a user of the technology that he recommends to others, that he is well situated to look at the strengths and shortcomings of the assistive technology that he comes across in both his professional and personal life, in particular, mainstream technology that is accessible.
In addition to his weekly contributions to Access Information News and Top Tech Tidbits, David's regularly occurring activities are his weekly tech radio show, bi-monthly exploring tech webinars for Vision Australia, his iSee podcast when something of note grabs his attention, and the weekly Tech Monday chat sessions.
